Index for Indices

Trump’s customs madness is currently affecting everything.
It’s fascinating how one man can influence the stock markets. A rogue who thinks of manipulation …
His rival Hillary Clinton tweeted a very nice visualisation of the stock market losses from the New York Times at the beginning of the week – have a look at the picture below.
Why do I think this is worth mentioning?
It uses index lines. Unfortunately, you see them all too rarely.
Index charts are good for comparing trends in different sets of data. Because stock market indices VARY WIDELY, an absolute comparison is difficult. An index chart compares the relative changes over time of different data series by normalising their starting points to a common value, in this case zero at the beginning of 2025. This makes it possible to compare the performance of several national indices.
An index for indices! 😎
Unfortunately, I have seen very few charts like this in dashboards, allthough I definitely see a use case. Am I right?
Have a nice weekend,
Lars
