{"id":22173,"date":"2025-06-06T14:12:19","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T12:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.graphomate.com\/2025\/06\/cutting-the-x-axis\/"},"modified":"2025-06-13T14:28:46","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T12:28:46","slug":"cutting-the-x-axis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.graphomate.com\/en\/2025\/06\/cutting-the-x-axis\/","title":{"rendered":"Cutting the x-axis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This Weeks Goody I found (TGIF) is about inflation and how to lie by cutting the x-axis &#8230;<br><br>Last Tuesday I stumbled across a visualisation of the British Conservatives in my Bluesky timeline posted by the dataviz guys of the Fincancial Times.<br>It shows the inflation trend in the UK from October 2023 to April 2024.<br>The curve has risen significantly since Labour came to power.<br>Really that significant?<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, the author of this visualisation has chosen the appropriate time range of the inflation trend that best supports his message \u2018Labour are making everyone poorer\u2019 &#8211; and \u201cdesigned\u201d the x-axis accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, the Dataviz team at the Financial Times have sat down and drawn up a meaningful chart showing the inflation figures over the last 5 years.<br>Now the picture looks quite different!<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1080 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1080\" autoplay controls loop muted src=\"https:\/\/www.graphomate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/chartflight.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The conclusion?<br>Please, show as much information as possible within the given space of a dashboard.<br>For me this is one of the fundamental IBCS rules: CONDENSE \u2013 besides STRUCTURE (and both have nothing to do with technology!)<br>I know that it\u2019s hard to convince recipients of a high information density in reports. But it&#8217;s worth to try it again and again and again \u2026<br><br>Not convinced?
